Calgary Flames's Dennis Wideman had his 20 game suspension reduced by an arbitrator to 10 games, after he had served 19 of those 20 games. The change means, that means he will get paid for 9 of the games he missed, about a quarter million dollars. That's wrong. The arbitrator was wrong, in my opinion. I don't think he served long enough. Wideman should have gotten a minimum of a season suspension, all to be served after the unsuspecting lineman he cross checked returns to work. I don't care what his previous record was. He two hand cross checked an official in the back and has taken him out of his job because he was having a hissy fit!

When you watch the video, remember, Wideman defended his collision saying couldn't avoid it (the collision) with linesman Don Henderson. Nevertheless, he had enough time to lift both hands up and shove his stick across the linesman's back and knock him to the ice.
As of today, according to Bleacher Report, NHL linesman Don Henderson reportedly continues to suffer from concussion symptoms after being hit from behind in late January. There's no timetable for his return to the ice. He's not working, he's losing money... Wideman should be out as long as he is, then give him the suspension, and, WIdeman's lost salary should go to cover Henderson's cost and loss. Again, the victim (Henderson) is the one losing here. Wideman's actions are a poor example for youth players, in any sport. He's earned a new nickname in my book.... OJ.

| In the picture sequence, you can see Wideman brought his stick up just before he takes aim at the linesman. If you go back to the video in the Burnside article, watch how after he gets up from being crushed himself, his stick is down... then he bangs it on the ice as many hockey players do when they are pissed about something... then he raises it as he lines up Henderson. Note how he immediately looks up (shot 4) at the over ice screen to watch the replay, again, as most players do after plays that make the wide screen. He knew what he was doing.... having a tantrum because he got crushed himself moments earlier.. |
