It's Been A Good Day

Short and sweet tonight, I promise. #LetTheFightBegin.  Best day in a long time.  Still short on energy and endurance, but, that;s coming back slowly as your well wishes, prayers, and divine intervention is doing it's job.


The plan is coming together:

• An appointment with my Boston area oncologist at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) - Dr. Jill Allen is set for June 17th
• An appointment with my oncologist at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Colon and Rectal Cancer Center - Dr. Nadine McCleary is set for June 10th
• A redoing the RSO protocol (60g of high THC, greater than 70% within a 90 day window)

Just Me Rambling About Potential Treatments

Just a bit of rambling today, not a lot of substance, it's just how the day went.  Spoke with my local oncologist and met with my local oncology Physicians Assistant today, along with speaking with my built in second opinion, the amazing Dr. Steve Paul (one of my awesome brother-in-laws).  With the best caregiver I could have hoped for, we have come up with a plan of attack.  #LetTheFightBegin.


The rough plan includes:

• Reconnecting with my Boston area oncologist at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) - Dr. Jill Allen with hopes for a clinical trial or other approach she might suggest.
• Reconnecting with an oncologist I asked to review my diagnosis and treatment plan several months ago - Dr. Nadine McCleary at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Colon and Rectal Cancer Center. 
• Connecting with MD Anderson Hospital in Houston in search of clinical trails I may be eligible for.
• A redo of the RSO protocol (60g of high THC, greater than 70% within a 90 day window) ... this is subject of a whole other post over in my CanCannaCure.com blog.  More to come.

I Reject the Opinion There Are No More Options To Treat My Cancer

I learned tonight that the medical community is about to tell me there are no more options to treat my cancer.  I reject that notion.  #LetTheFightBegin.  I'll apologize in advance for some of my language in the video ...

Belchertown Cancer Survivor Urges Community to Get Necessary Screenings

Holyoke, MA (May 29, 2019) - After several weeks of just something not feeling right, In February of 2018, Dan Greeley of Belchertown went emergency room visit which lead to Greeley being diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer.  Greeley said “I let life get in the way of the really important things and I had missed his second, and now past due routine colonoscopy". Greeley underwent a colon resection surgery that removed about ⅓ of his colon.  His treatment follow up to the surgery was followed by 11 rounds of chemotherapy. Scans following his treatment showed no signs of cancer and Greeley was luckily in remission. He will be periodically monitored with blood work and scans for the rest of his life.  

Unfortunately, in December of 2018 one of the blood tests showed changes. He was immediately scheduled for a scans which showed spots on his liver. A New Years Eve biopsy confirmed that Greeley’s colon cancer was now at stage 4 and had metastasized to his liver. Thus, 2019 has brought more rounds of chemotherapy, liver resection surgery and more chemo.  From the onset of his treatment, Greeley is focused on increasing cancer screening awareness and raising funds through the local Relay For Life of Quaboag Valley.

“It is amazing the number of people who put off the cancer screenings that can save their lives. Early detection is key,” commented Greeley.  He went on to say “early detection leads to early diagnosis resulting in much improved treatment plans and changes for success”.  His words are simple today “Get screened”.

For many years Greeley has been involved in one way or another with the Relay For Life. After his diagnosis he started a team and set a fundraising goal of $1,000. Within two months, Greeley had raised a few thousand dollars to support the American Cancer Society and immediately set his goal for this years Relay event.  Currently,Greeley set his team goal  of raising $10,000 in 2019 and is already over $8,300 in support from friends, family, and neighbors.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is the only organization fighting cancer on every front. Funds raised from Relay For Life events allow the ACS to attack cancer in dozens of ways, each of them critical to achieving a world without cancer – from developing breakthrough therapies and innovative research, to building supportive communities that come together to  help those affected by cancer with access to treatment. The ACS provides empowering resources to deploying activists to raise awareness and develop game-changing approaches to address the cancer burden for all people.

Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Tacoma, Washington, in 1985, the Relay For Life movement of 3.5 million participants across the world unite at more than 4,500 events to celebrate people who have been touched by cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action for lifesaving change. Symbolizing the battle waged around the clock by those facing cancer, the event can last up to 24 hours and empowers communities to take a stand against cancer. Since 1985, Relay For Life events in the U.S. have raised more than $6.3 billion.

The Relay For Life of Quaboag Valley is set to take place on Friday, May 31 at Belchertown High School at 6:00 p.m. through Saturday, June 1 at noon. The Past 2+ Months From Hell

I haven’t had the ability to write in about 3 months.  It’s one thing to have to battle cancer, it is quite another to also have to battle the chemo drugs you are being prescribed because they have turned against you. 

I've tried writing so many times I've lost count.  So tired and without energy or motivation, I just haven't been able to write or do much of anything.  This post will be published tonight, I hope.

As if learning cancer came back and spread to my liver wasn't bad enough, the new chemo I was on almost did me in.  I'm not sure if that is a factually true statement, but it sure felt like I had been done in.  After 3 rounds of chemo, I was hospitalized.  I have been feeling horrid since somewhere around February 1st... tired all the time, absolutely no energy, and very frustrated.

I don't know how I will ever catch up with all I wanted to write... a little here and a little there.  The weird thing is that my mind doesn't seem to have slowed down at all, only the physical body is in slow motion.  The biggest struggle has been the frustration I have with not being able to do anything, the feeling of withering away to nothing, and the feeling of being left out and how others seem to have moved on.  I'm just so lucky to have the family support and caregiving I do have and am getting.  Nevertheless, it can be a very lonely feeling.  Having said all that, I am better today than I was yesterday, last week and the last few months.  I will beat this bastard.

It is good, there always is good to find.  We sometimes need to dig deep to figure out what the silver linings are ... I hate how the bad stuff comes to the surface so easily.  I must first thank each and every supporter.  The outpouring of messages, cards, visits, dinners, and general support has been amazing.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

On April 2nd, I underwent liver surgery to have a colon cancer lesion removed from my liver.  That surgery went extremely well.  On the way to the hospital, I issued a challenge to my nearly 1,000 Facebook friends for everyone to donate to Relay For Life while I was undergoing the surgery.  The response was AMAZING!  Over $700.00 raised while in surgery for American Cancer Society.  At Relay For Life, no donation is too small, each and every dollar counts. I have nearly reached my personal goal and our team goal for the year.  However, if you look at the numbers, don't let them make you think we've got this yet.  The almost $7,000.00 is just a start.  We are just beginning to dent the surface.  What are the cost?  The most recent rounds of chemo (a three-day process) that ends with me getting a shot to help restore white blood cells because the chemo is so brutal on one's system.  That one shot is billed at just a shade under $22,000.00 per shot, and I had and was billed for 3 of them.  In total, I've been billed over $400,000.00 since my cancer diagnosis.  I'm lucky in that my insurance is covering a majority of my care, there are others without coverage.  I'm making it by OK, but there are many others in desperate need of our help.  People with cancer need your financial help covering the expenses.  Please help me help them ... first, join my Relay team, no matter what if you also support eliminating cancer.  Then ... if you are in the western Massachusetts area, come walk with me on May 31st in Belchertown at 6:00 pm. I would be honored ... donate if you are so moved, but join the team and share that you did.  My goal for 2019 is $10,000.00.  We need to come together as humanity and work to eliminate cancer. For now, I'll close with saying I hope to get to my other blog, CanCannaCure.com, my blog documenting my use of medical marijuana, AKA Rick Simpson Oil or RSO, to help me kill my cancer.  Think what you may, I lived a drug-free lifetime, but when you are told you have stage 4 colon cancer, a death sentence in my mind, you do anything and everything to kill cancer.  I have been remiss from writing in that blog as well, there's more catch up to go.  Rick Simpson was said to have cured his own cancer using RSO.  I'm doing it too, right alongside chemo and any other medical.  I've been off chemo for about 2 months, have continued to ingest RSO and my tumor markers have continued to go down (my last CEA test was 2.9 on April 4th).  I'll be honest saying I'm pretty anxious over the next couple results.  I've been here before with short-lived positive results, but I'm staying positive.

Another Memorable Day in the Life of Dan

Although I should have known, I was caught by total surprise again today when my wife Carol, Amanda, and Nikki.  Going out on what had been touted as a girls day out, maybe a nails day or something, but, instead, a gift of caring, sharing and love.  The girls all came home with permanent marks of love ... they all got tattoos.  A colon ribbon for my soon-to-be daughter in law, the sun, and moon on Nikki's beautiful feet and the awesome story behind their meaning ... I will forever be looking up during my journey.  Lastly and most touching to me is Carol's specially designed colon cancer ribbon, but my name below it.  I never expected I would ever see that, or hear her give more than she will ever know ...



This could hardly a better day. Carol, saying thanks is not enough ...  You have rocked my world ... but ...

Wow’ed Tonight With A Surprise Gift

For those that might not know, I’m sort of into Christmas  decorations, which, by now have been all packed away, and in particular, I have a pretty big “nutcracker” collection.  They are not the super nice German made nutcrackers, but more of your run of the mill Christmas decoration style.

Tonight, we get a knock at the door as I let the girls (Carol and my daughter Tina) take a break from installing the new engineered hardwood floor in the family room (a nice little nearly 600 square feet project).  A former co-worker (Gerry Bernard) and his wife (Karen) are at my door.  We don’t often see each other much since my retirement except when he has stopped by with homemade soup during my eventful year i has fighting cancer.  I thought maybe they stopped to wish me well as I begin the first again.  But no, it was for something that totally shocked, surprised, and caught me off guard.  Karen has made me a quilt to go with my nutcracker collection. An amazing work of art!

So Karen, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, it’s absolutely beautiful and so skillfully made.  Wow.  The best I can do for this year is to share a picture from Christmas past, with a peek of the nutcracker collection, as it was then.
